George, the young, intellectual daughter of a Scot and a French woman, falls in love with the farmer's son Gavin during the summer holidays in a Scottish village. This love is to last a lifetime, even though George, back in Paris, studies and lives an emotionless sex affair, while Gavin becomes a fisherman and gets engaged to the down-to-earth Josie. Even decades later - George is divorced and lives with her son on the American East Coast, Gavin is father of three children and still a fisherman - they hold on to their "amour fou", unencumbered by the hardships of everyday life, which only comes to an end with Gavin's death.
